NFC vs QR Code for Instagram: Which Works Better?
Both methods get someone to your Instagram profile in a single action. They are not the same, though. Here are the differences, without exaggerated promises.
QR code: free and everywhere
A QR code costs nothing to create and fits on anything you can print: a poster, a business card, a window. The other person does have to open the camera, aim it and tap the notification. In a busy or dark room, or when the code is small, that sometimes goes wrong.
NFC: faster, but it needs hardware
With NFC you hold the phone near the chip and the link opens. No camera and no aiming. The trade-off is that you need a physical tag and the phone has to get close, about four centimetres. You can't print an NFC chip on a poster; it is an object.
Side by side
- Speed: NFC is usually one action, QR takes more.
- Distance: QR works from further away, NFC only very close.
- Cost: QR is free, NFC needs a keychain or tag.
- Look and feel: a keychain or stand feels more personal than a printed code.
- Editable: both can point to a new link, as long as you use a dynamic QR code or a rewritable chip.
What's the smart choice?
Use QR for anything you print and NFC for places where people are already close: your counter, your bag, your keys. Many businesses combine both. If you want to try NFC, read what an NFC Instagram keychain is.
